I wonder how many people are aware of the Legal Aid available in our Justice system. I suspect many people would be well and truelly 'Up the Creek without a Paddle' without it.

I applaud your attempt to find something to put in this thread, and agree that in the interests of balance and fairness it is right to at least consider aspects for inclusion within it however I am about to throw a spanner in the works here.
Yes, Legal Aid does provide finacial payment to soliciors acting on behalf of those who cannot provide for it with their own means and that is a positive thing, however that is in reality about as far as compliments in this area should extend. It is infact a required to be provided under article 6 paragraph 3.c. of the european convention of human rights so I'm not sure exactly what effect it's provision being manditory has on your opinion of it's part in our justice system.
You will find though if you do a bit of research on the subject that the legal aid process and payouts are actually so restrictive that many solicitors have ceased practising criminal law as a result, choosing to focus on other areas instead which therefore reduces how many are available, choice, and increases the length of process due to those who are left being overworked.

What is right with the justice system is that the means to make it fair and accountable are still there - what we have to do is find ways of making sure they are enforced.
It is absolutely right that everyone has the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty.
It is absolutely right that everyone has the right to a professional defence against charges by the state against them
It is absolutely right that the Crown must disclose to the defence any material which would undermine the crown's case, or assist the defence case (etc etc etc)
These are all laudible and proper foundations for our justice system. They must be adhered to rigidly, and then the justice system, whilst still not perfect, would be a great deal better than it is right now.

After that post I think I really should have had a prize up for offer in this thread. Quite brilliant. The principle's and concepts are right, absolutely no question at all.
I think in many ways this is partly why the general public have difficulty in accepting that there is anything wrong with the justice system, all they know is the basis on what the system is supposed to work but not what happens to make it differ from that.
I do think though that because this is the case, this post could equally be suited to the what's wrong with the justice system thread too since not being implemented the way it is designed to be is indeed actually a flaw. Nevertheless, the point made is true and it is something that's right with the justice system.

The only thing right about the English Justice System? it is a right load of @#@# and most of those whose occupation is connected to it a set of useless greedy corrupt criminals

While it is easy to understand anger and frustration if you or someone you love has been let down by the justice system, it is important not to alienate public support by appearing hostile. For that reason we request that the language used on this forum is kept civilised.
