It has been brought to our attention that when police officers report misconduct within the force they can be bullied and hounded out of their positions for doing the morally right thing. This in turn can dissuade others from trying to restore the integrity of the force which is a vital part in any fair justice system.
They who try and uphold the law honestly can as a result become victims of miscarriages of justice themselves and in turn be wrongly accused/convicted by the people they speak out against. It is important that those who joined the police force for the right reasons with the right values be encouraged to remain within it and be defended from attack after doing the right thing.
I have also been made aware of an organisation which has been set up to afford officers the support they need and deserve for doing so. Independent Police Support Group was established in 2004 and aims to provide support for police officers, staff and their families under these conditions which contains the following quote
"Information for members of the public
The police service like any other large organisation will have some bad apples. However police officers generally do not have the same employment rights as members of the public and cannot make ‘complaints’ against fellow officers.
There are many officers who have done the ‘right thing’ and have been hounded out of the police service for reporting malpractice and corruption."
We would urge any officer who is aware of malpractice and corruption to make contact with this site so as to find the support and advice needed to report it.

Hi Billy, I have been and looked at the site you posted and it seems to be very professionally done, and shows that injustice really happens to anyone.
I had already read a little about Shirley Mckies case, and i found an article on this site with more detail, its a bit of a read but truely shocking how she was treated. Her career ruined and her life turned upside down. Its great that this organisation is there for police officers, staff and their families. All be it a disgrace that they cannot speak up about malpractice and corruption but i truely wish that a lot more would speak up then maybe just maybe there would be less wrongly accused/convicted people.
Well done Billy for highlighting this site.

Hi Billy,
Keep up the good work. I was unfortunately one of those officers and was turned on having reported malpractice and corruption including the failure of my colleagues to investigate serious offences against members of the public.
Police are not allowed to be in a union and only have the Police federation to fall back on and who are not independent. The Police Federation unfortunately encourage such behaviour by their failure to become proactively involved and assist their members. I am one of many who have effectively been abandoned.
An officer is sometimes in a worse position because he is unable to make an official complaint and does not have any right of appeal to the Independent Police Complaints Commission should a force refuse to investigate an officers allegations.
No doubt there are probably people in prison who should not be there and police officers could have provided evidence which may have prevented a person being charged; let alone convicted.
Officer's have committed suicide as a result of their treatment. Usually young officer's may be quite oblivious to the deep seated culture of the service which may only raise it's head when an officer starts asking difficult questions.
Particularly in the CID it is evident that there is a reluctance to deal with disclosure properly and evidence is witheld from the CPS. Statements are still written to provide evidence to assist a prosecution and evidence left out that may assist a defendant or undermine the prosecution case.
Having been through the system, I firmly believe that the police should not be able to investigate themselves and that an independent organisation should be responsible for this role.
Take care

Many thanks for your post and for standing up to be counted when you should. Just a pity no one seems to have been paying attention really, at least not in any constructive way.

Hello guest
I am astonished to read your post really. I did know that there are many many points where police deny disclosure or bend the truth etc etc to assist with a charge/conviction however I am surprised to read that you are not allowed to be a member of a union. I take it there's no anti bullying policy in place? I thought these things would almost be like a basic human right in this day and age. No union I can't believe it-who do you turn to when you make a human error as everyone does at some point

Hello Guest. First of all may I welcome you to the forum. I must say that when I logged on this evening and saw your post I was both heartened and saddened. Heartened to know that there are, as Black says still people out there who are willing to do the right thing, which by the sounds of things takes some courage. I am also saddened to discover that there is so little help available to you. What a situation to be in. I wish you well. Would it be pertinent of me to ask how long you were in the force for and at what point did you decide to call it a day and Blow the Whistle.

Hello Guest,
I echo the other illustrious members of this site in welcoming you and commiserating with you about your ordeal.
I cannot imagine what it must have been like despite reading all through the support site.
However I must admit that I am not surprised.
I thought it was understood and accepted within public consciousness, that the police overall protect themselves and are biased towards their own system.
Human nature is such that people will protect their position, their group or 'tribe' that feeds them. In the same way as the MP's sought to protect the rights to their expenses. I am not confident that change will occur. The police force is not elected and has powers that the individuals employed, by nature of the type of individuals who apply to be police, enjoy wielding. Any threat to that power will be stamped on.
Cheers,
Mike

Welcome Guest. So good to hear that at least one officer out there has decided to act against the malpractise and corruption within the police force but sorry to hear about the consequences of your honesty. I hope you get the same support that you are offering others on your site.
I wonder how many other officers out there feel the same way as you but are too afraid to act? Perhaps they would like to come on the site and air their views!!!
Good luck!!
